ABOUT THE ARTISTS

In an era of uncertainty, Jessie French's practice stands as a vital intervention, reimagining our relationship with the environment and technology. Her specialization in algae-based plastics, resonating with the origins of petrochemicals, fosters a unique dialogue with materials, blending ancient elements with innovative environmental solutions. French's works, echoing patterns of distant oceans and atmospheres, inspire reflection on our connection to natural systems. Her melding of traditional craftsmanship with modern materials highlights her commitment to ecological concerns, while pioneering new narratives in artistic materials and techniques. Nicole McLaughlin is a multidisciplinary designer. Since 2018, she has explored greater possibilities for sustainability through self-initiated and collaborative efforts. While sustainability is often used as a marketing buzzword because of its PR value, McLaughlin’s accessible, witty, and functional practice serves as a reminder that sustainability is an operational philosophy. By transforming discarded miscellanea into objects with new, imaginative, and often unexpected utility, she shows how a circular approach to design and manufacturing can help us reframe waste as an opportunity. McLaughlin has partnered with a variety of companies—from Hermès to Crocs to HBO—and was the first-ever brand ambassador for Arc'teryx. In 2022, she was announced as a Forbes 30 under 30 member within art and design. Follow her on Instagram @nicolemclaughlin.
