Anchorage Welcoming Week Community Celebration

10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14
Join community organizations, artists and performers to kick-off Anchorage’s Welcoming Week. Watch performances on the museum lawn (weather-permitting), visit with community organizations and draw inspiration from community leadership addresses. Explore the museum collection through docent tours in Chinese or Spanish. Enjoy free admission to the museum sponsored by Wells Fargo (Death in the Ice and planetarium program fees still apply).
Welcoming Art Walk
10:30 a.m. to noon. Begin on Museum Lawn
Grab a map and tour downtown public art locations with a Municipality of Anchorage guide. Late-comers can follow the printed map route for a self-guided tour.
Welcome Week Celebration
Noon to 3 p.m. Museum Lawn (Atrium if raining)
Anchorage’s Welcoming Week begins on the Anchorage Museum lawn, with community organizations, performances and activities.
Docent Language Tours
Explore the museum collection through the voices of volunteer docents. Tours conducted in one language each tour.
11 a.m. Chinese (Mandarin) Tour: Cultural Exchanges
Through lively discussion and close-looking, learn about the importance of Alaska’s natural resources and its historical relationship to China on a guided tour. No art or history background is necessary. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is presented in Chinese (Mandarin). Meet in the Museum Store.
人文交流: 汉语(普通话)解说
讲解员引领参观安克雷奇博物馆。汉语(普通话)解说,深入浅出,探索阿拉斯加的自然资源及其历史地位,了解阿拉斯加和中国之间的历史联系。本节目对所有人开放,参观者的文史水平不限,免费。讲解员将在博物馆入口处欢迎您。
3 p.m. Spanish Tour: Cultural Exchanges
Learn about cultural exchanges between Alaska and Mexico in a guided tour and close looking. No art or history background is necessary. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is presented in Spanish. Meet in the Museum Store.

4 p.m. English Tour: Coming of Age
Discover objects related to the coming-of-age theme in a guided tour with close-looking opportunities. No art or history background is necessary. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is presented in English. Meet in the Museum Store.
Hiroshima—Amchitka Legacies: What Future Can We Choose?
4 to 6 pm. Auditorium
Join International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Kathleen Sullivan, director of Hibakusha (Atom Bomb Survivors) Stories, and Ray Acheson, director of Reaching Critical Will, both nuclear disarmament educators, and others discuss the topic “what future can we choose?" Organizers will present one thousand origami cranes to the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima as “Prayer from Alaska” when they visit later this year.
