Join us for an evening with author and illustrator Michaela Goade for a talk and reading of her two most recent publications, Berry Song and Moon Song. Celebrating the recent opening of Goade’s exhibition, Song of the Seasons, the reading will be followed by a book signing, with limited copies available for purchase. This event is supported by Alaska Center for the Book.

About the Artist and Exhibition:

Alaska’s landscape is defined by seasonality, as changes in light, weather, plant and animal life, temperature, sound, and mood shape the dynamic shifts that occur as the land transitions from the abundance of summer into the darkness of winter.

This exhibition celebrates the beauty and richness of these cyclic rhythms. Drawn from Michaela Goade’s books Berry Song and Moon Song, images, sketches, and process videos immerse viewers into the jeweled bounty of summertime berry-picking and the crystalline stillness of a winter walk. 

Goade is a Tlingit and Norwegian artist based in Sitka, Alaska. She became the first Native American to receive the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 2021 for children’s book illustration for her work on We Are Water Protectors, written by Carole Lindstrom. Her work centers on love, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for place, encouraging readers to connect with the land and their communities and inspiring the next generation to be thoughtful placekeepers.
