Indigenous Lens: Photography Workshop for Young Adults

Learn the art of photography in this 4-day exploratory workshop, taught by Jenny Irene Miller (Inupiaq). In this workshop, participants will be introduced to camera basics and the techniques required to make pictures, including camera functions, an introduction to lighting, and narrative storytelling through lectures from the instructor. Through demonstrations, discussions and short shooting assignments, photography students will produce a mini photo project due at the end of the workshop. No prior photography experience is necessary.

Participants are welcome to use their own digital camera or a smartphone camera, and are expected to participate in all four sessions scheduled. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to the workshop to review and sequence your photos, although this is not required. May be of most interest to Alaska Native and Indigenous young adults but open to all young adults (age 18-25) interested in using photography as a storytelling tool.

Free thanks to support from The CIRI Foundation. Space is limited; registration required. Register by 5 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2024.
