Color surrounds us in plants, both endemic and transplanted to Alaska. Some plants can share their natural color through the dyeing process. Learn about natural dyes from practitioners Oona Martin and Jamie Hirano in this first-in-series workshop, featuring the color yellow. Participants will get hands-on experience dying an item of their choice; experiments will be demonstrated using marigolds and tansy. Future classes will explore other plant dyes.
Participants may bring one small, lightweight, white or pale-colored item made of 100% natural fibers (such as cotton, linen, hemp, silk or wool). For best results, make sure the item is clean and free of any fabric softeners or other laundry additives that prevent dye from adhering to fibers. Registration required. $10 registration fee.
