Cultural Arts: Baleen & Scrimshaw

Investigate baleen objects and scrimshaw techniques used in Alaska Native cultures and develop scrimshaw skills with grades 6-12. Close look at examples of baleen objects from the Anchorage Museum collection, learn from Indigenous knowledge holders through online resources and suggested classroom visits, and complete a scrimshaw-inspired project.

We would like to express our gratitude to Aaron Leggett, John Hagen, and Solomon Elavgak for sharing their time and knowledge to refine this curriculum unit. Thank you for your guidance and support.
