Alaska Native Phrases

Audio transcripts and translations are provided. These materials are also accessible by QR code on physical vinyl cling sheets

These Iñupiaq/Inupiaq phrases were created to support Iñupiaq/Inupiaq families reclaiming the speaking of Iñupiaq/Inupiaq in four different domains in the home: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room. Most of the phrases were originally created in collaboration between Edna Ahgeak MacLean and Annauk Olin. Georgianne Merrill graciously translated these phrases from the North Slope Iñupiaq dialect to the Shishmaref Inupiaq dialect. Families are encouraged to integrate these phrases within daily routines incrementally, with the inspiration to further study and build upon these phrases with their relatives and children.
