Art of the North Galleries

During a residency at the Anchorage Museum in summer 2025, artist and author Kip Fulbeck developed an Alaska chapter of The Hapa Project. Through portrait sessions held across Anchorage, he photographed 86 Alaskans whose images and handwritten responses are presented here.

Fulbeck began The Hapa Project in 2001, inviting participants to respond to a simple question: "Who are you?" Over the past 25 years, the project has grown to include more than 1,200 portraits and personal statements. Together, they offer a collective portrait of how people describe themselves, their families, their experiences, and their sense of belonging.

Visitors are invited to contribute to The Hapa Project/Alaska during select portrait sessions. Participants will have their portraits taken and respond to the question, "Who are you?" New portraits and statements will be added to the installation throughout its presentation.
