First Floor, South Corridor and First Floor Lobby

Rehearsals in Worldbuilding: Lada Suomenrinne and Jenni Laiti brings together the work of two Sámi artists who consider their homelands in northern Finland and Norway as sites of layered meaning and memory. Through photography and film, the artists find new ways to express Arctic knowledge and deeply held relationships between people, lands, waters, and living beings.

Together, the artists use the camera as a world-building tool, inviting viewers to reconsider what images can document—and what forms of knowledge they can carry.

About the artists

Lada Suomenrinne is a Sámi photographic artist. Starting from the stillness of archival images and the idea that photography “kills,” they examine the fictional history of Sámi photography and the role of the camera as a non-traditional tool in contemporary Sámi arts. At the center of their artistic practice are borderlands—their own backyard—and the visual articulation of the presence of non-human beings and ancestors.

Jenni Laiti is a Sámi artist, duojár (master of traditional Sámi crafts), and Indigenous rights activist. Love for their land and people, as well as justice for all creation, carry them forward. Laiti often collaborates with others and acknowledges that humans are nothing without their communities. For this exhibition, she collaborated with Invisible Flock and local Sámi communities affected by damming on the Deatnu River.

Rehearsals in Worldbuilding: Lada Suomenrinne and Jenni Laiti is presented with the support of the Finnish Cultural Institute of New York and Frame Contemporary Art Finland.
