Anchorage Museum’s Slow Craft Week Warms the Season with Handwork and Community
Jan. 22, 2026
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — As January settles in and the days stretch long with darkness, the Anchorage Museum offers something cozy to do indoors: Slow Craft Week, a celebration of wintertime making and togetherness. From January 27–31, 2026, the museum’s Seed Lab becomes a gathering space for knitters, menders, weavers and anyone seeking connection through handwork.
This week-long series of free and low-cost events welcomes people of all ages and experience levels to practice fiber arts, learn repair skills and share stories. Set against the backdrop of deep winter, Slow Craft Week encourages a slower pace with time to sit, create and reconnect. Workshops and drop-ins emphasize reuse, skill-building and community resilience. Part of the national Handwork 2026 initiative, the museum’s programming centers themes of craft as care, sustainability, and culture. Events include:
- Slow Craft Week Kick Off: Craft in America screening + conversation (Jan 27)
-
Repair Culture Show & Tell (Jan 28)
-
Sit and Knit, Crochet, or Craft Night (Jan 29)
-
Creative Weaving + Rag Rug Workshops (Jan 30–31)
-
Youth and family sewing sessions (Jan 31)
-
Mending & Making Potluck (Jan 31)
“Taking time to do something slow is counterintuitive sometimes, and we may need it more now than ever,” said Rebecca Pottebaum, Director of Programs at the Anchorage Museum. “Whether you’re a practiced maker or new to a skill and eager to learn, Slow Craft Week is designed to hold something for everyone, even if just to meet like-minded people and spark joy in the dark winter months.”
