Janna Avner
Janna Avner (Koyukon Athabascan) creates immersive installations that reflect the experience of living between landscapes. Growing up in Los Angeles while returning each year to her mother’s family along the Yukon River in interior Alaska, Avner’s aesthetic and conceptual concerns are deeply influenced by her relationships to these disparate places. Avner's exploration of light incorporates sculpture and digital art projection. Her light-objects often become symbols of self, or even abstract portraits.
She has exhibited in Los Angeles, Japan, Iran, and New York, and New Mexico. Her artworks and curations are covered in Vice, Hyperallergic, LA Weekly, Artforum, ARTNews, the Los Angeles Times, the Paris Review, and the New York Times.
