North by North / Week of the Arctic 2017
The Anchorage Museum resides in a North that is pivotal to the world — not a frontier, but a horizon. We are looking at the contemporary and future North through exhibitions and programs encompassed within our Polar Lab. The Anchorage Museum is a key collaborator on North by North, an international festival celebrating Arctic innovation, resilience and sustainability May 11-14.
Despite its mythology, the North is not a land untouched. It is a place of human life and human imprint.
Programs at the museum will include interactive exhibitions, curated conversations and community discussions, arts and crafts expo, Arctic Winter Games demonstrations, film festival, Northern food and beer event and dancing.
North by North concludes a series of Week of the Arctic meetings held in Fairbanks in conjunction with the May 11 transfer of the Arctic Council Chairmanship from the U.S. to Finland.
Other museum programs celebrating Arctic innovation this summer include:
- Design and resilience discussions;
- Center/Periphery, a series of art projects and discussions about innovation and place;
- The exhibitions Polar Bear Garden, I Am Inuit, and Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage: The First Peoples of Alaska
