Join us for a series of weekly artists talks/Q&A sessions with artists featured in the Extra Tough: Women of the North exhibition. Artists will explore their own practice in relationship to feminisms and issues affecting women in the North. This week features Susan Joy Share and Betany Porter.
Susan Joy Share was born in Syracuse, NY. Her interest in clay work took her to the College of Ceramics at Alfred, NY, where her fascination with the book form began and she received a BFA. During her 20 years in NYC, Susan pursued an art career, taught classes and studied traditional bookbinding and conservation. Her knowledge of book concepts, structural variations, materials and movement potential, blends with her passion for sculpture, painting, sewing and collage.
Betany Porter (b.1980) grew up in Laguna Niguel, CA and moved to Anchorage in 2010 where she lives and works as an artist, educator, and curator. Porter’s recent paintings examine our contemporary relationship to nature and how it is represented through personal experience, objects of daily life and popular culture. Her work investigates the line where the real and the constructed meet. Her work utilizes pattern, abstraction, sculpture and humor to play with perception and representation of place.
