Anime, Manga among Anchorage Museum summer art workshops for kids

The Anchorage Museum is offering fun and innovative art workshops throughout the summer. Classes meet Monday through Friday through August. Class themes reflect the museum's summer exhibitions and begin with 10 minutes of directed drawing followed by instruction from qualified art instructors.
Classes are offered for children ages 5 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years. Ages 5 to 8 meet 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $75 members, $85 non-members. Ages 9 to 12 meet 1 to 4 p.m. Cost is $120 members, $130 non-members. (Unless otherwise specified).
Out of the Ordinary: June 18 to 22
Unleash your imagination by creating wall sculptures from ordinary objects in this workshop based on the theme of the new Children's Gallery Exhibition Out of the Ordinary.
Origins: July 9 to 13
Discover materials indigenous to Alaska and make paper and works of art while exploring themes in the exhibitions Arctic Spirit and Changing Hands.
Tracing Raven: July 16 to 20
10 a.m. to noon: Ages 5 to 8, Only
Listen to stories about the raven, a cultural hero and trickster-transformer. Discover images of raven hidden in works of art. Create a felt appliquŽ of animals that transform or play tricks.
Arctic Spirits: July 23 to 27
Discover the magic in Inuit stories of animal helping spirits and create masks and costumes inspired by the exhibition Arctic Spirit.
White Buffalo: July 30 to Aug. 3
The spiritual qualities of the white buffalo in Native American culture are numerous. Explore the symbolism of this great beast in the exhibition Changing Hands. Create creatures through drawing and air-dried clays.
Guarded Secrets: Aug. 6 to 10
There are numerous secrets that can be discovered in works of art throughout the museum. Create your own secrets in a mosaic work of art by piecing together glass, beads, pottery shards or stones.
Looking North: Aug. 13 to 17
Find inspiration in Arctic Spirit and create your own prints using a variety of printmaking processes all based on the theme of the natural world.
Anime, Manga and Comics: June 25 to 29
9 a.m. to noon: Comic Art, Ages 9 to 12, $120 members, $130 non-members
1 to 4 p.m.: Anime and Manga, Ages 13 to 15, $120 members, $130 non-members
