The Fifty Stone Lithographs of Fred Machetanz
On view through January 2007 Fred Machetanz (1908-2002) was one of Alaska's most popular artists, known for both his paintings and for his prints of life in Bush Alaska, a life that Machetanz knew from his first trip in 1935. He painted Alaska's Natives, whalers, trappers, prospectors and wildlife. He learned first hand about Eskimo life and traveled by dog sled. To make a living, he and his wife, Sara, wrote and illustrated children's books about Alaska, traveled the lecture circuit in the lower 48 states during the winter, and made one film about sled dogs for Walt Disney.
