Anchorage Museum hosts Black History Month event: poetry slam and poets' panel
February 15, 2006
Continuing the museum's literary theme for Black History Month, this adult program focuses on the slam genre and includes five local poets reciting original works Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. Anchorage slam poets Gwendolyn Faye, Leah Frankson, Kima Hamilton, Trey Josey and Kokayi will perform and also talk about their work and inspiration in a panel discussion. Part poetry, part performance art, slam as a genre reflects the modern Hip Hop movement with origins going back to 1960s urban centers like New York and Chicago. Visitors will also be able to participate during an open mike time at the event. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $3 members and students, $5 general public.
