Anchorage Museum of History and Art to Participate in Museums Helping Museums: <br>A National Relief Effort for the Gulf Region
October 25, 2005
The Anchorage Museum of History and Art is pleased to announce that it will participate in "Museums Helping Museums: A National Relief Effort for the Gulf Region." The Anchorage Museum will donate 10 percent of Anchorage Museum Shop sales through Nov. 30, 2005, with a goal of donating up to $3,000, to support museum recovery and conservation efforts in the aftermath of the recent hurricanes.
During the month of October and continuing through the end of November, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art will join together with others in the American museum community to support our colleagues in the Gulf region as they work to care for damaged collections and to restore the vital educational, cultural, and economic roles of their museums.
"Our hearts go out to the museum employees in the Gulf coast region, some of whom have lost their homes and family members during the hurricanes," says Museum Shop Director Georgia Blue. "Communities along the Gulf coast have suffered a tremendous loss of natural and cultural patrimony. Some museums have been destroyed and many others have experienced damage to or loss of collections. There is an urgent need not only to assist these institutions to reconstruct and stabilize their collections but also to provide support until their communities can be rebuilt and financial support systems re-established."
All funds collected will go to an assistance fund established by the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC), and will be distributed according to policies established by the SEMC Board of Directors. Funds will be used for direct assistance to museums and museum professionals in the affected region. Assistance will be available to museums of all types, including art, history, science, children's, zoos and aquaria, and gardens. To view a list of other participating museums, visit the American Association of Museums website at www.aam-us.org/sp/mhm.
