German-born artist Ruth Duckworth, 86, is internationally known for her visionary work and is one of the leading figures in the filed of ceramic sculpture. Duckworth continues to work full-time in her Chicago studio, creating new and unexpected forms and objects. Curator Jo Lauria will discuss the artist, her work, and the nationally touring exhibition-"Ruth Duckworth, Modernist Sculptor"-that premiered at the Museum of Arts & Design in January.
"Ruth Duckworth has inspired generations of artists and designers by the power of her poetic forms," says curator Lauria. "The rich variety of Duckworth's work demonstrates her deep connections to nature, culture and the human figure, and provides an extraordinary opportunity to explore links between Duckworth's groundbreaking minimalist sculptures and major currents in 20th century modernism."
Lauria is an independent curator and writer specializing in the field of modern and contemporary decorative arts. Lauria was formerly a decorative arts curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where she worked on many exhibitions and contributed to museum catalogues. Most notably, she organized the national tour and authored the accompanying catalogue for the exhibition "Color and Fire: Defining Moments in Studio Ceramics--1950 to 2000," that premiered at LACMA in June 2000. Lauria has written several books on decorative arts including one on Ruth Duckworth.
