Fall Arts Classes for Adults and Children

The museum is offering art classes for children and adults this fall ranging from quilting to calligraphy. Class registration runs Aug. 21 through Sept. 8. Register by calling (907) 343-6185. Adult and children's classes are listed below:
Kids
Drawing Toolbox with Tessa Sutton
Grades 5, 6, 7, 8
Tuesdays, September 17-November 19
4:30 PM-6:30 PM
Students will create fun and fantastic robot sculptures by assembling
found objects like metal, wire, plastic or old electronics and transistors.
Participants can bring in their own pieces and parts or augment
them with the materials available in class.
ABCs of Alphabet Animal Drawing with Cindy Shake
Grades 1, 2, 3
Wednesdays, September 18-November 27

Do you know your ABCs? Do you love animals? If so
join Cindy Shake, author and illustrator of Alaska Animal Alphabet and
Amazing Animal Alphabet, in this fun class. Kids will learn how to draw
and make a personalized illustrated alphabet. Special attention will be
given to animals and animal figures. The end result will be an exciting
art project! Note: There will be no class meeting on October 16.

Found It! with Jennifer Jolliff

Did you ever look at an old wrecked car and see not
twisted steel but a crouching dragon? Have you ever taken old toys and
used their parts to make a new one? If your imagination is looking for
some fun this fall, join us for a rollicking ride through the wild
world of "Found Art." In this class students will get a chance to
stretch their artistic abilities and look at a world of old used stuff
with shiny new eyes. The class will create two-dimensional collages,
collagraphs (a printmaking process), and 3-D sculptures. Students will
learn about composition, color, pattern, personification, dimension,
balance, media and more.

High Schoold and Adults
Fiber Art: Creativity and the Elements of Design with Pat Sims
Tuesdays, October 8-December 10
7 PM-9 PM
Accomplished quilt artist Pat Sims will lead
a class where students explore line, shape, texture, space, value, and
color. Lectures, demonstrations, class involvement, and hands-on
experimentation provide opportunities to develop original designs with
an emphasis on textile constructions. A supply list is available at the

Adventures in Watercolor with Brenda Jaeger
Wednesdays , September 18-November 20
7 PM-9 PM
Designed for students of all skill levels. This
class with focus on applied watercolor techniques and design. Mixed
media applications will also be explored. An overview of still life,
landscape, and animal figures will be discussed. Significant time will
be spent developing a student's own technique and vision as it applies
to watercolor. Students should come to class prepared to paint. A
supply list is available at the Information Desk of the Museum or by
calling the Education Department at 343-6185.

Explorations in Contemporary Calligraphy with Catherine Doss Senungetuk
Thursdays, September 19-November 21
7 PM-9 PM
This class is for students with some experience with
italic letterforms. Students will begin with joins, flourishes, Roman
caps, page design, and the use of various tools and papers. Students
will learn an uncial alphabet, plus discuss how to choose and design an
alphabet to reflect a chosen content. The course will culminate with
students crafting a nontraditional book incorporating decorated papers
and letterforms/text. Students should come to class prepared to work. A

Family Saturday Classes
Art Medley: Multi-media found objects with Robin Murphy
September 21-November 23
10 AM-Noon
This class will introduce families to a wide
range of art media. Students will learn basic art principles as they
have fun creating. Paper machŽ, tempera and watercolor painting, clay
and plaster sculpture, and wire creations are just a few of the media
that will be explored. Families with children 5 years old and older
will enjoy turning their imagination into pieces of art. 10 weeks, $160
members per family/$180 non-members per family
Family Watercolor/Acrylic Technique Class with Robin Murphy
September 21-November 23
12:30 PM-2:30 PM
Several different techniques in watercolor and
acrylic paint will be explored in this class. Families with children 5
years old and older will build upon their art knowledge and learn to
make watercolors sing! Color mixing, art principles, and experimenting
with design will all be introduced. Each class will demonstrate a
different way to create with paint. A wide variety of painting surfaces
from watercolor paper to wood and fabric will be used. The art created
can be worn, displayed, or used functionally. 10 weeks, $160 members
per family/$180 non-members per family
