Western Arctic Caribou Herd
Florian Schulz
Western Arctic, Alaska
With over 350 000 members the Western Arctic Herd is Alaska`s biggest caribou herd. The area of the proposed Western Arctic Coal mine overlaps with their annual migration route. As the entire herd of hundreds of thousands of individuals comes together it seems to become one enormous living organism moving across the tundra. Every year the Western Arctic Caribou Herd migrates many hundreds of miles. Kukpuk River Valley with Sakpik Mountain in background.
