Girl Scouts at Harding Lake, 1950s
The Girl Scouts of the USA was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low to inspire young girls everywhere to build confidence, character, and courage. The first all-Black Girl Scout troop was formed in 1917, but full integration didn’t begin to occur until the 1940s and 1950s and it wasn’t until 1975 that the first Black national board president, Dr. Gloria D. Scott, served the organization.
