Founded in 1975 and incorporated in 1977, the Alaska Black Caucus (ABC) advances the educational, cultural, and political well-being of Black Alaskans. Over the years, the ABC has hosted Black leaders such as Shirley Chisolm, Alex Haley, Dick Gregory, and Rosa Parks. The ABC also published the first comprehensive book to address Alaska’s Black history, Everett Louis Overstreet’s Black on a Background of White: A Chronicle of Afro-Americans’ Involvement in America’s Last Frontier, Alaska (1988).
