Eastchester Flats, Ingra and Orca Streets to 15th Avenue to Chester Creek
The Anchorage neighborhood known as Eastchester Flats was once Alaska’s largest Black community. It was roughly bounded on the west by Ingra Street, on the east by Orca Street, on the north by 15th Avenue, and on the south by Chester Creek. In the 1950s, one estimate put three- quarters of Anchorage’s Black population in Eastchester Flats, likely the result of having been denied access to other neighborhoods. Eastchester Flats was known for its lively nightlife. The neighborhood was largely dismantled through a process known as ‘urban renewal’ by the early 1970s. What exists of the community today has been absorbed by the Fairview neighborhood.
