The Anchorage Museum Turns 50
July 18, 2018
By Julie Decker, Museum Director/CEO
In 1966, Anchorage Mayor Elmer Rasmuson brought together a group of interested friends and colleagues to plan for a museum that would serve as a cultural inspiration for visitors and residents.
The Anchorage Museum opened its doors two years later on July 18, 1968, with a collection of borrowed paintings. This Wednesday, July 18, 2018, marks the official 50th birthday for the museum.
It’s important to mark the big moments and I’d like to make sure we take a moment as a museum and a community to recognize this one.
Thank you for supporting this organization and for shaping its future. We have worked to ensure that the museum will celebrate birthdays for decades to come.
We’ve come a long way and we’ve never stopped making sure the museum contributes something meaningful to this community.
