LOCAL HUB WITH A GLOBAL FUTURE
July 01, 2016
The Anchorage Museum is a local museum dedicated to its Anchorage and Alaska communities. The museum represents Alaska in many ways, presenting histories of Alaska, the cultures and art of the North, and the science that helps us understand our landscape and adaptations. The museum also believes in strengthening our community connections through expanding connections to the globe. We highlight places that are both similar and wildly different as a way to better understand how we think about both our past and our future.
Contemporary issues are typically not isolated to one place but are global in nature and impact. We want to find ways to learn from each other. We reach out to the Circumpolar North to strengthen our relationships with our neighbors of latitude and reach out to many places and people through our Curated Conversations and other global programs. We send exhibitions around the U.S. and bring new ideas and perspectives to Alaska. This year we are working on an educational exchange with Paraguay and are developing programs in Iceland and Norway. We are also looking at ways Alaska is connected to Russia as part of a special exhibition and series of public programs in 2017 that will mark the 150th anniversary of the purchase of Alaska. We support Alaska artists in their work and bring artists from around the world to Alaska.
