The Anchorage Museum family lost a dear friend with the passing of Verna Johnson von der Heydt on April 10, 2015.
Verna and her husband, Judge James A. von der Heydt, were long-time committed museum volunteers and patrons. Verna was an active museum volunteer for more than 20 years, and Judge von der Heydt was one of the founding members and first president of the Anchorage Fine Arts Museum Association, now the Anchorage Museum Association.
The Von der Heydts had a particular passion for the conservation and growth of the museum’s collections. They donated $1 million to the museum, a gift Verna made this past winter, which established the Judge James A. and Verna von der Heydt curator position.
The von der Heydt curator oversees the curatorial practices of the museum across disciplines and ensures the museum’s interdisciplinary collections, exhibitions, and public programs balance the highest quality of scholarship and innovation. The gift is also permanently recognized on a plaque installed in the museum atrium.
