Amy Meissner’s work with textiles primarily focuses on the emotional, physical and literal work of women, but additional themes such as displacement, loss of memory and loss of culture also enter her body of work. When a Swedish friend offered to send a box of linens from her town’s church thrift store, a side comment about the number of refugees looking for items to fill their new homes became the resonant image for Amy. In her words: “So many of us are connected to cloth, but unless forced to choose between what to keep or leave behind, we may not realize the history and memory embedded in those fibers. To rescue cloth is to rescue memory, tradition and the work of the hand…think of what it means to rescue people.” Read the full post here.
