We strive for the museum’s volunteer workforce and staff to be a diverse pool of talents, professional experiences, personalities, and backgrounds united by a shared set of values.
Volunteering offers opportunities to socialize, continue learning, and develop career and leadership skills, The museum offers many opportunities for adult and teen volunteers: Tour visitors through exhibitions; assist with public programs or special events; engage visitors through hand-on activities and more.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering for the museum challenges you to make a difference in people’s lives. Our volunteers come from many walks of life and range from students to retirees. Whether you want to use your social skills by working at special events, learn research techniques by working in collections, or learn more about Alaska by giving gallery tours, we have a volunteer opportunity for you. Minimum age to volunteer at the museum is 13 years old.
Here are some of the ways you can get involved as a museum volunteer.
Teen Volunteers
Become an interpretive guide at the Anchorage Museum, by helping visitors understand and interact with the various topics and content presented through our many exhibitions and galleries. As an interpretative guide you will perform fun, informative demonstrations, handle and show live reptiles and marine animals, give tours, and lead hands-on activities throughout the museum. Training and staff support will be provided to prepare you for your new and exciting interpretative role.
Temporary Exhibits and Programs
Assist in a variety of ways with the changing exhibits that happen at the Museum. Help organize, plan, and host a program, event, or symposium related to the varying and interesting topics represented through our changing exhibitions. Learn more about our exhibitions.
Science Guides
Interact with Museum visitors to encourage exploration and enjoyment of science activities and exhibits within our Discovery Center.
Education
Assist with children’s activities, art classes, tour development, the museum’s holiday exhibit installation and the preparation of art projects.
Docent/Museum Guides
As a docent, lead tours through our permanent art and history exhibitions. As an interpreter, answer questions from museum visitors about specific exhibitions. Learn more about our exhibitions.
Visitor Services
Visitor services welcomes new and returning visitors to the museum. Our goal is to provide a unique, personally tailored museum experience for each of our guests. We provide essential information and resources to ensure a positive visitor experience. Visitor services may act as a host during special events like First Fridays and exhibition openings.
Atwood Resource Center
Help with library-related tasks, photo identification, archiving and photographing new materials. Learn more about the Resource Center.

Volunteer Trainings
Experience is not necessary. Teaching tools and training are provided. You must attend a volunteer training session before you can begin volunteering at the Anchorage Museum.
