Walrus Transformation Figure
Carved from ancient whalebone, this transformation figure manifests the relationship between shaman and walrus. As with other Native America cultures, the people of the Arctic traditionally believed in the ability of certain people, especially shamans, to transform into animals. This process is often depicted in carvings. Made from whalebone, walrus ivory and baleen. 9" long, 7-1/8" high.
Dancer Doll
Made by Shelee Chamberlain, a Yup'ik artist from Bethel, this doll depicts a traditional dancer. It features a carved wooden face, and a wolf fur and beaver headdress. 10-1/2" high.
