Imaginarium closes Fifth Avenue location Aug. 23; opens new facility within the Anchorage Museum in spring 2010

The existing Imaginarium at 737 W. Fifth Ave. in downtown Anchorage closes its doors Aug. 23. This allows Imaginarium staff to move into the Anchorage Museum and prepare for the spring 2010 opening of the new Imaginarium Discovery Center.
“The Imaginarium staff is excited to have a larger, state-of-the-art facility where we can offer families so much more,” said Chris Cable, Imaginarium director. “Of course, we’re a bit saddened to say goodbye to this building, where more than 1 million children have discovered a love for learning and science. But we’re eagerly anticipating the future in our new space at the museum.”
The public can bid farewell to the former Imaginarium noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. Activities include science demonstrations, giveaways, snacks and a sneak peek at plans for the new Imaginarium Discovery Center.
The nonprofit, grassroots organization was started by four Anchorage women. The Imaginarium opened in 1987 as a discovery-based science center for families. Since then, the Imaginarium has developed a national reputation for educational, entertaining and interactive science programs. The Imaginarium serves an average of 115,000 people and 600 school classes annually. So far, its outreach program has brought science workshops and assemblies to more than 100 rural Alaska villages.
The Imaginarium legally merged with the Anchorage Museum in July 2008.
In the months leading up to opening of the new facility, Imaginarium staff will prepare the new facility, continue outreach programs and help plan and program two upcoming science exhibits: Science in Toyland (Sept. 19, 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010) and Star
Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination (Feb. 10 to April 25, 2010).
The Anchorage Museum (www.anchoragemuseum.org) is the largest museum in Alaska, and one of the top 10 most visited attractions in the state. The museum’s mission is to share and connect Alaska with the world through art, history and science.
