An Introduction to Printmaking
Printmaking is a way for artists to make more than one copy of a design or image they create. It is an artform that allows the artist to transfer an image created from an original source - usually a metal plate, stone or block of wood - to another surface (usually paper). Most printmaking methods use a tool called a PRESS which applies pressure to the metal plate, stone or block to transfer the original image to the paper (or other surface). The set of prints is known as an EDITION - a set of identical prints which are then numbered and signed by the artist. Printmaking extends beyond the world of the art to include books, newspapers, posters and many other areas of production. |
