Smithsonian Spotlight: Holly Nordlum

Inupiaq artist Holly Mititquq Nordlum is an imaginative graphic designer, illustrator, print maker and jewelry designer. Owner of Naniq Design, she discusses melding traditional imagery and contemporary graphic design in her work. Nordlum participated in the National Museum of the American Indian Artist Leadership Program and shared her research with Anchorage School District summer campers. Free

Mask Making Workshop
6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 15-29
Students of all abilities explore technical and theoretical aspects of mask making. Each student receives a set of carving tools and a block of wood. Alaska Native artist and mask maker Drew Michael provides a short guided tour of some masks in the museum’s collection and discusses his own work to inform and inspire each student to develop his or her own unique story for their mask. All materials included. $300 member/$330 non-member. Register online.
