Sense of Place: Kobuk Valley National Park

Kobuk Valley National Park is known for sand dunes, caribou migration and as a research stand-in for Martian landscapes. What does it mean to be a tourist in a place like this? A visual artist, poet, curator, educator and filmmaker travel from the Anchorage Museum to the Kobuk and back, exploring the tourist experience and sense of place. They share a "home movie" about the trip, along with souvenirs, interviews and artistic responses to the experience. This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Arctic Desert. Polar Obsession: Paul Nicklen

Nicklen shares the stories of his work capturing images of life in fragile, frozen ecosystems. Exploring Mars: Rovers of the Red Planet

A dynamic young engineer at NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Kobie Boykins is on the front line of Mars exploration. Boykins designed the solar arrays that power the Mars exploration rovers, Spirit and Opportunity landing on Mars on January 25, 2004.
