1% for Art Opportunities for Artists

The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center curates and manages the 1% for Art Program for the Municipality of Anchorage. Since 1978, the program has accessioned over 280 pieces in the collection, located in schools, fire stations, senior centers and other municipal facilities.

The 1% for Art ordinance defines a professional artist as a person who practices in the visual arts as a professional. A professional artist has income realized from the sale of artwork; frequent or consistent art exhibitions; work placed in public institutions and museums; received awards and honors; and, training in the arts.

When the Anchorage School District or the Municipality of Anchorage funds a construction project, a 1% for Art budget is determined and a jury is formed to make decisions about the artwork. Depending on the scope of the project, a prospectus is sent to a mailing list maintained within the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. It might be sent to Alaskan artists only, or to a national or international list, depending on the jury's instructions.

Artists interested in 1% for Art opportunities should contact the program to be placed on the mailing list to receive calls for entry for construction projects.

All calls for entry require the professional artist to submit a proposal, which includes a set (15-20) of slides of the artist's work, a slide list and a resume. In addition, there is often a request for brief concepts or thumbnail sketches with a description of an idea and a draft budget for the proposal.

The 1% for Art Program also maintains an Artist Registry which is renewed every two years. Artists are invited to submit 15-20 slides of their artwork with a slide list and resume. Slides are shown to juries interested in inviting artists from the registry to make proposals, rather than sending out a prospectus for an open competition. Generally these are for projects with smaller budgets or shorter timelines. The 1% for Art Program is open to all artists.
