Explore important themes and social messages from your life using a variety of media and techniques. All skill levels are welcome as we work with an expressive choice of watercolor, chalk, ink, charcoal, acrylic and mixed media techniques in this workshop.

The Art of Music

Create your own concert poster or album cover using pencil, ink and markers. Learn textual and graphic elements and discover how musicians use them to advertise and communicate.

Alutiiq Paddle Making Workshop
1 to 4 p.m., August 11 through 15

Learn how to make an Alutiiq kayak paddle. Carve a cedar paddle and decorate it with time-honored designs, while learning about the Alutiiq culture.

Anchorage Art Adventures
Learn about art at the museum and create your own art inspired by Anchorage's many trails in these fun and interesting art adventures offered in conjunction with the Municipality of Anchorage Dept. of Parks and Recreation

Express your own unique perspective of Anchorage through collage. Be inspired by urban art and art depicting life in Alaska at an evening lecture on July 17 at the museum. Then, create a collage of an urban scene on a guided walk through Anchorage led by artist Jody Jenkins and recreation specialist Ronn Randall. Supply list provided at July 17 lecture. Learn about artist-adventurers Bradford Washburn and George Browne who climbed Denali photographing and painting as they went along. Museum collections director Walter VanHorn shares stories of these and other plein air artists at an evening lecture Aug. 8. Next, adopt a pioneer artist's perspective on a guided hike led by recreation specialist Ronn Randall and artist Jody Jenkins, taking you to primitive settings that will inspire you to draw or paint what the pioneers themselves may have seen. Participants provide own transportation, equipment, and supplies (must be easily carried). Supply list available at Aug. 8 lecture. Class size is limited.
