What's new in 2009?
Museum will be closed April and May for renovation,
ready to accept visitors June 1
  • New wing of the museum will open May 30. We recommend allowing two hours for a visit due to the increase in size.
  • New Marx Bros Café offering full service and quick lunches
  • Expanded museum shop with authentic Alaska Native art, books and more
  • New entrance and lobby will be located on 7th Avenue facing C Street
  • Visitors must secure coats and large bags in lockers prior to touring the museum

Admission rates**
Museum prices remain the same in 2009! $8/adults, $7/seniors and military, $2 suggested donation for 17 and younger, $6/ for groups of 20 or more per visit.
*Please note that special touring blockbuster exhibitions may require a separate admission fee.

**Admission is temporarily reduced to $5 Jan. 27 through March 29.
Ages 17 and younger are still admitted free.

The discount reflects some gallery closures due to construction on the museum expansion project.

Summer hours:
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily

Winter hours:
10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday
Noon to 6 p.m., Sunday
Closed Mondays

Museum tours
Interpretive tours and lectures are conducted by trained museum docents, staff and volunteers. Docent-led tours of the Alaska Gallery are offered at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. daily in summer, with a daily noon tour that allows visitors a choice of topics.

Tour drivers/operators

  • "When possible we ask tour groups to give at least two weeks advance notice before a visit. Email tour dates to sales and marketing manager
  • Please contact visitor services staff if a group will be more than 30 minutes late. 907-343-6198.
  • Drivers/guides receive free admission plus a voucher good at the museum café and discount coupon for the museum shop
  • Drivers/operators are responsible for registering at the group sales counter upon arrival.
  • The museum will no longer invoice tour companies using vouchers
  • Limited coach parking is available along 6th Avenue between A and C Street.
  • Museum visitor services staff will gladly assist tour operators with questions. Email or contact visitor services manager at 907-343-6119.
  • FAM tours are available beginning in May. Email or contact sales and marketing manager to arrange, 907-343-6158.
  • Drivers/operators are encouraged to visit the museum as often as they wish free of charge. Please bring employment identification.

Visitor rules
It is the responsibility of the tour driver/operator to inform all visitors of the museum's rules and regulations.

  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the museum's galleries.
  • Large bags and backpacks must be secured in museum lockers.
  • Cell phones should be turned off in galleries.
  • Please consult signs before taking photographs or video as some restrictions apply.
