Public Programs Coordinator

The AnchorageMuseum at RasmusonCenter has immediate need for a Public Programs Coordinator.

Under the general direction of the Director of Education & Public Programs the Public Programs Coordinator is responsible to spearhead, develop and coordinate youth and family driven programs at the Museum utilizing the Museum’s resources, collections, and exhibitions to engage diverse audiences and ages. This position works closely with the Leadership Team when necessary to ensure goals align with the departmental and organizations’ mission.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
·      Adapt and/or modify existing public programming in the areas of art, history, and science to meet the needs of the Museum’s education mission.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Education and Public Programs and various internal departments to ensure a successful rich programming slate throughout the year. 
  • Manage and maintain in collaboration with the Art, Social Studies and Science Coordinators a rich docent program involving the teaching and learning of content and development of a variety of museum learning experiences.
  • Collaborate and network with a variety of community organizations, public/private schools and universities to provide rich and unique programming.
  • Manage related program budgets, existing and/or new funding sources and reporting in collaboration with the Director of Education and Public Programs, Finance department and the Advancement Director.
  • Work closely with the Teaching Volunteer and Marketing Coordinator to help recruit, train, and staff on and offsite youth and family public programs offered by the Museum, as well as, marketing those opportunities to the general public.
  • Outline program area goals and implement attainable timelines with an interdisciplinary focus in collaboration with the Director of Education and Public Programs.


Qualifications:

 
·        Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent experience in developing youth and/or community public programming.
·        Minimum of 3 years of experience managing projects with discreet timelines and budgets.
·        Experience developing cultural and/or science-related youth and family public programs (portfolio pieces helpful). 
·        Proficiency in current technology and office administration operations.
·        Excellent written and verbal skills.

The AnchorageMuseum is recruiting for the position of Controller.  The successful candidate will be a recognized leader who can collaboratively work on the financial affairs of the organization and with preparation of financial analyses of operations, including interim and final financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of management.  The position also oversees the activities of the Accounting Department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements, and annual audits and annual budgets.

·             Bring significant experience in budget development and oversight, managerial accounting, and working in a team environment.
·             Have exceptional skills in the areas of accounting software usage, spreadsheets, problem-solving and analysis.

Required qualifications for the position are:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • Current Alaska CPA or CMA certification is highly desired.
  • A minimum of 5 years hands-on managerial accounting experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in all aspects of accounting required.
  • Thorough knowledge of Solomon, QuickBooks, Peachtree, or equivalent accounting software required.
  • Working knowledge of FRx Financial Reporting required.
  • Exceptional skills in the areas of accounting software usage, spreadsheets, problem-solving and analysis required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Proven ability to supervise staff resulting in a positive and productive work environment.

Part Time Sales Associate

The Anchorage Museum has multiple openings for Part-Time (up to 30 hr/wk) Museum Shop Sales Associates.   
     
Under general supervision of the Shop Manager, this position has the responsibility to be active in all tasks associated with sales and customer service in the Anchorage Museum Shop to include stocking of merchandise and replenishing of displays; oversee inventory levels and will assist with special projects.  
     
   Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  
·        Acute awareness to the needs of visitors in the Anchorage Museum Shop with assistance in viewing, locating, and purchasing of Shop merchandise. Emphasis on the best in customer service.  
·        Oversees sales station when a Shop Volunteer is unavailable.  
·        Stocks and replenishes merchandize in displays throughout the day.  
·        Maintains inventory reports on selected departments and makes recommendations for future orders.  
·        Provides assistance to Shop Volunteers in the operation of the computerized sales system and with general Shop information.  
·        Responsible for all aspects of Opening and   Closing procedures on the point-of-sale system and in the Shop.  
·        Keeps Shop Staff up-to-date on customer concerns and needs.  
     
   Knowledge/Skills/Qualifications:  
    •Familiarization with merchandise produced and created for Alaska markets.  
•Knowledge of Alaska history and Native cultures.  
•Ease and experience in using computer technology.

Science Guides

The AnchorageMuseum has immediate openings for two (2) part-time Science Guides.  The position has the responsible is responsible for assisting with implementing public programs specifically science demonstrations; modeling inquiry based-learning through visitor engagement, and on-going exhibit support and upkeep in the new ImaginariumDiscoveryCenter exhibition.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors & assist them in exploring & understanding the exhibits. 
  • Present short science demonstrations to the public. 
  • Animal handling to include reptiles, marine invertebrates and arthropods. 
  • Examine teen volunteers’ short science demonstrations to the public for quality control. 
  • Know and be comfortable teaching and training science demonstrations and oral presentation skills in collaboration with the Teen Volunteer Program Manager. 
  • Mentor teen volunteers on public presentation, animal handling and maintaining a clean and safe facility. 
  • Helps Teen Volunteer Program Manager plan out daily demonstrations, teen volunteer breaks/lunches, and tasks as needed.   
  • Ensures all demonstrations, schedules, materials or supplies, as well as, recording exhibit breakages are communicated and documented in a timely manner to the Teen Volunteer Program Manager or the Director of Education and Public Programs. 
  • Communicates regularly with other Science Guides, teen volunteers, Visitor Services and Security when necessary. 
  • Arrives on time for shifts and follows through on daily opening and/or closing tasks, facility maintenance and safety, and monitors teens on shifts and the implementation of floor demonstrations and/or activities. 

 
Qualifications:
 
  • Must be at least 14 years of age. 
  • Must have a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service at The Imaginarium Discovery Center 
  • Must know all current Imaginarium Discovery Center’s daily demonstrations, facility care duties, animal care and handling, and daily procedures and routines. 
  • Must attend all volunteer mandatory training sessions. 
  • Must be available to work at least 10 – 15 hrs per week

Temporary Metadata Specialist

The AnchorageMuseum at RasmusonCenter has immediate need for a temporary (9/12/2010 – 6/17/2011) Metadata Specialist. 
 
Under general supervision of the Resource Center Mgr/Photo Archivist, this position has responsibility for either using existing metadata or creates new metadata to catalog 10,000 existing image scans into The Museum System (TMS) collection management software. Two thousand (2,000) of these images will also be catalogued in greater detail for inclusion in the Alaska Digital Archive using CONTENTdm.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe information from negative sleeves, index cards, or photographs into formatted spreadsheets, TMS, and/or CONTENTdm.
  • Enter additional collection data, including photographer provided information. 
  • Subject catalogue images using localized thesaurus and Library of Congress Subject Headings. 
  • Initiate and track metadata cataloging workflow under Photo Archivist’s supervision. 
 
Qualifications:
 
  • High School graduate or equivalent required.  
  • Course work in Library and Information Science preferred. 
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working in a library setting preferred. 
  • Experience with spreadsheets, data-entry and/or databases, i.e. metadata cataloging, The Museum System, CONTENTdm, or subject cataloging. 
  • Knowledge of Alaska history, culture and literature preferred. 
  • Minimum six (6) months metadata and image cataloging preferred. 
  • Evidence of excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.

Teen Volunteer Program Assistant

The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center has immediate need for a Teen Volunteer Program Assistant. Under the general direction of the Director of Education & Public Programs, and the Teen Volunteer Program Manager, the Teen Volunteer Program Assistant will assist in the working day-to-day operations and the teaching and learning in the new science galleries. When the Teen Volunteer Program Manager is not present, this position acts as supervisor for Science guides and teen volunteers (ages 13 – 17 years).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Teen Volunteer Program Manager to coordinate, train, mentor, observe and help evaluate teen volunteers, ensure safety at all times, and model positive public relations and program delivery.
  • Help organize and manage weekly schedules and provide on-going feedback to the Teen Volunteer Program Manager to help track hours, incentives and interest-levels.
  • In collaboration with the IDC team, the Teen Volunteer Manager, and the Director of Education and Public Programs provide science research and implement ongoing learning rich learning experiences when possible.
  • Serve as point of contact and communication for guides and teen volunteers and their parents/guardians when the Teen Volunteer Program Manager is not present.
  • Work closely with the Teen Volunteer Program Manager and other related Museum departments to plan and facilitate Annual Teen Volunteer recruitment and on-going activities.
  • Coordinate with the Teen Volunteer Program Manager the day-to-day opening/closing shift duties, report any exhibit breakages, and provide daily check list of needed supplies and materials.
  • Help maintain the teen volunteer break area to ensure it is adequately clean and safe at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in working with teens and/or volunteers required; science interest is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, Internet navigation and research required.
  • Basic understanding of human development, learning styles and multi-sensory teaching techniques preferred.
  • First aid training and CPR certification preferred.
  • Experience working with live animals and Science laboratory chemicals preferred.

Visitor Services Assistant

The AnchorageMuseum at RasmusonCenter has immediate need for a Part-Time Visitor Services Assistant.

Under general supervision of the Visitor Services Specialist, this position performs cashier duties and provides information to visitors of the Museum. Incumbents work variable scheduled hours conforming to the seasonal hours of the facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

·        Ensure that each Museum visitor receives outstanding customer service by providing a friendly environment which includes greeting and acknowledging every visitor, answering questions, maintaining outstanding standards, and thorough exhibit knowledge along with all other components of customer service.   

·        Maintain an awareness of all exhibit information, promotions, and advertisements.  

·        Restricts access to the galleries to ticketed or authorized individuals  

·        Accurately and efficiently complete all sales transactions and maintain proper cash and media accountabilities at cash registers.  

  • Responsible for accurate cash accounting and reporting.  
  • Opens and closes the cashier station to the public in accordance with scheduled hours.  
  • Perform cashier functions and complete various reports.  
  • Assists museum staff and security with event setup, filing, errands and tour groups as needed.
  •   Performs other duties as assigned.

  Knowledge of :

 

  • Physical layout of the Museum facility; knowledge of cash handling procedures.

      Skill in :

 

  • Cashier functions and completion of required forms and reports.

  Ability to :

 

  • While maintaining professional appearance and conducting themselves in a professional manner, greet and assist the public; explain rules and policies, and communicate effectively with others in providing information regarding Museum exhibits and events.
